What a real WMS example contains
Bin-level locations. Not "the warehouse" but A-12-3-2 — every storage slot an address, with capacity and suitability rules.
Directed put-away. The system decides where received goods should be stored — by velocity, size, affinity — and directs the forklift there. The operator does not choose.
Wave and batch picking. Orders grouped into waves by carrier cutoff or pick-path; pickers routed through the building in optimised sequences, often across hundreds of orders at once.
Labour management. Tasks assigned, timed and measured per operator — productivity as a first-class dataset.
Slotting analysis. Fast movers relocated toward dispatch; slow movers up high. The system reshapes itself as demand shifts.
If an example does not contain at least three of those five, it is an inventory system wearing a WMS name. The company-type examples show where each record weight belongs.
How this differs from inventory software examples
An inventory system example is record-shaped: receive against a purchase order, pick against live availability, count by cycle, invoice into accounting. It answers business questions — what to buy, what is promised, what the books should say. The WMS answers floor questions — where, in what order, by whom, in how many steps.
Both are legitimate; they are different tools. The confusion costs businesses twice — buying a WMS around wrong quantities, or buying an inventory system to fix slow pick paths. The full comparison draws the line, and the software list maps the vendors once you know which side you are on.
